RALEIGH, NC (WECT) -

Former "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken appears to have won the Democratic nomination in North Carolina's Second Congressional District, one day after his chief opponent Keith Crisco unexpectedly passed away.

According to the state Board of Elections website, all nine of the counties in the Second District have reported "official" results following today's canvass of primary election votes. Aiken has 40.8 percent of the votes, enough to avoid any runoff against Crisco, who finished with 39.4 percent. Crisco, the former state Commerce Secretary, died Monday after a fall at his home in Asheboro according to officials at his company.

Aiken will face incumbent Rep. Renee Ellmers in the November General Election. Ellmers received 58 percent of the vote to win the GOP primary against Frank Roche.  The State Board of Elections will meet on Wednesday to authenticate the primary election results in multi-county races.
