School Board President Candidate: George Seaborough

On Tuesday, the five people running for Savannah-Chatham Public School Board of Education President took part in their final debate ahead of May 20's election.

George Seaborough and his wife have said they may not have children yet, but the future of the school district is why he is running.

Seaborough points to his Master's in Business Administration and his understanding of budgets as reasons to elect him as School Board President.

"But more so, I am willing to bring the community more involved in our school board process," said Seaborough. "We have a lot of parents and teachers out there who don't feel they have a voice because they don't have a chief advocate fighting for them on a daily basis."

Seaborough wants to be that chief advocate. As the board of education debates the change in start times for students, including starting high school seniors later in the day, Seaborough said he agrees with fellow candidates on the studies showing academic improvement.

"However, we must take into consideration a lot of our high school students are the babysitters for their siblings, so if we change the bell times, we must create a parent panel to get from total community," he said. "We also have to decide how we will pay for it because our transportation costs continue to increase."

Seaborough points to 2,000 children two or more grades behind in Savannah-Chatham Public Schools as the fuel behind what he believes is the most pressing issue facing the district moving forward.

"We have one main goal as a school board, and that is to make sure our children are leaving our care ready to go into the work force and ready to go into college," he said.
