Only handful of guns stolen in Thunderbolt Guns break-in

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

New details have emerged in the break-in at a Thunderbolt gun shop on Victory Drive.

The store has already reopened, and it is a testament to the store's security systems. The owner said whoever did this only got away with a handful of guns, and more of them weren't even working properly.

"We had what we think is an excellent security system," said Thunderbolt Guns owner Dick Berman. "Everything worked as designed."

Berman said the criminals stole less than a dozen firearms, and most of them weren't even working, let alone in one piece.

"Rifles, shotguns and gun parts, incomplete guns, guns that were perhaps missing a barrel," said Berman.

In fact, not a single handgun was stolen, but that's because Thunderbolt Guns secures most firearms at the end of the day.

Despite the break-in, Berman said everything worked like it should.

"We pride ourselves on the security in this building. We have subsequently made some upgrades and it's also a testimonial to the speed in which the Thunderbolt Police responded once they were notified through the alarm company," said Berman.

He said the shop is back on its feet and business is going strong. The store has been open since Friday.

The investigation is still ongoing, and ATF has said they are actively working leads at this time.
