Lawmakers shoot down pay increase

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A proposal to increase the salary of South Carolina lawmakers has been shot down in the senate during the latest round of budget debates.

The senate's budget originally allocated $2 million to go towards the pay increase for all 170 lawmakers.

It would have given every lawmaker an additional $1,000 per month for travel expenses.

Lawmakers spent three hours debating the issue, and decided instead to allocate the money to local governments.

Lawmakers currently receive $1,000 a month for travel expenses, on top of an annual salary of $10,400.

The state has underfunded local governments by millions of dollars since the recession began in 2008.
