SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Police believe a disagreement over sidewalk manners escalated into violence on River Street over Mother's Day weekend.

A family from the Atlanta area claimed they were attacked. Police still hope to find the other groupd of people involved in the altercation.

Some businesses were named in a Facebook post that went viral and brought attention to the incident, from the Bayou Café where the family from Atlanta had dinner and drinks, to an ice cream shop, the Olympia Café, where the family said they were turned away from after seeking shelter during the attack.

Some people have said there needs to be more police presence at night on River Street.

Police have said the incident was not a random act. The two groups, including the family of eight from Atlanta, crossed paths on the sidewalk. Two people from the second group made their way through, which caused a verbal exchange.

The Bayou Café said the Thomas family was drinking and acted pleasant 30 minutes before the incident, but they were not surprised by the altercation when they heard about it afterwards.

Alderman Tony Thomas said this is another example of why police need to be visible on River Street.

"I don't blame the police, but it does point to a need in this entertainment zone, and it is going to impact the brand internationally if we don't start taking a progressive action to make these streets a little safer at night," said Thomas.

Two off-duty police officers at Wet Willies did respond to the incident Saturday night. Police said the response time was 10 minutes, not 20 minutes as posted on Facebook.

There are still questions about the incident itself and what actually happened.
