School mourns death of senior

The tone at Long County High was somber and subdued on Wednesday.

Students and teachers remembered a student lost, especially so close to what should be a time of celebration.

"We've dealt with student tragedies before, but never a senior who was about to graduate the next week," explained Principal Scotty Hattaway.

By Wednesday morning, the whole school knew Joserath Barahona, known to friends as Pablo, drowned Tuesday afternoon while swimming at a borrow pit in the Sand Hill community.

Counselors are helping students through their grief. They described Pablo as a good student and a role model among his peers.

"Just a couple of nights ago, he spoke with those kids and encouraged them to do what they needed to do to pass their exams and study and get all the credits so they will graduate," noted Assistant Principal Sherry Lester.

Pablo's friends told rescue crews he went under the water as he tried to swim to the bank. Lester said those friends, especially fellow seniors, were taking it the hardest.

She anticipated the graduation ceremony next Friday would trigger sorrow as well.
