SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The city of Savannah worked with an outside firm to review and investigate several different aspects of the police department, and on Thursday the final part of the report was completed.

The last part of the report focused just on the Internal Affairs Dept., and the reason the city reached out to the firm in the firm in the first place was to investigate the allegations of misconduct and potential criminal activity taking place within the department.

The report presented on Thursday focused on why the Internal Affairs Dept. failed in handling that

MDBI found obstruction and/or interference within the Internal Affairs process by the chief and his command staff, that important partnerships were damaged, there was a difficulty in working with with the Internal Affairs software and systems to even gather and analyze discipline records.

There was also an overall failure to follow the defined standards. Council members said this report not only confirms some of the issues they were already aware of, but it helps them start to move forward.

"We have a diverse multi-jurisdiction of police officers," said Alderman Van Johnson. "Obviously we knew that discipline was not consistent. We knew that investigations were not consistent, we knew there were a variety of things that can affect the morale of our officers."
