Animal control officer rescues dog from highway

Posted: Updated:

A Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police animal control officer sacrificed his lunch to rescue a small mixed-breed dog who somehow had trapped herself on a bridge support 30 feet over an interstate Thursday afternoon.

Traffic was halted on I-516 at Highway 25 to allow two animal control officers to capture the dog after Officer Larry Rountree dropped the sandwich he had purchased for lunch onto the support to lure her out.

The dog, now named Zaxby after the sandwich, will be placed for adoption after a five-day medical evaluation.

Rountree allowed her to finish the sandwich.
