Savannah Arts Academy receives award from Grammy Foundation
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Friday night, Savannah Arts Academy band students are receiving a very special award – an award from the Grammy Foundation. Even though the very band director who helped them achieve this may not be back next year.
The band director was sent a letter of non renewal, and it's still unclear why, but it's clear that he has been instrumental in helping the band, because tonight they are getting awarded with an recognition from the Grammy Foundation out in LA.
Savannah Arts Academy bands students are preparing to end the year on a positive note, performing several songs at their final outdoor concert of the year. And on Friday night, these students were being recognized for their outstanding talent with the award and a $5,500 check as well.
"Unbelievable I actually put in for it. We had to send in an audition tape, and there were only 12 groups selected nationally and so we got it and I'm just blown away," Band Director Vann Thornton said.
Thornton did not say whether he plans to appeal the board decision to not renew his contract.
