What happened to the fireworks on Tybee Island?

Posted: Updated:
TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

Big crowds were getting wet and wild this past Friday for the Beach Bum Parade, but if you stuck around,  there were no fireworks at the pier.

Mayor Jason Buelterman said a group on Tybee had hoped to get permission to start fireworks every third Friday, but it didn't work out.

Word may have spread, but he said it was never something officially promoted and it wasn't a city sponsored event to begin with. He did say the fireworks will start later this summer.

"It turned out there was a conflict at the pier...someone else was using the pier through July, so they went forward and made an application to start using the pier in august," he said. "I don't know it was ever formally announced they would start in April, it was discussed in council but it was all contingent on them getting approval from the county for the pier."

Buelterman said starting on the third Friday in August, through the end of the year, fireworks every will happen on every third Friday.
