Trial begins for mother accused of attempting to kill daughter

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Nearly three years after a Beaufort County mother was accused of trying to kill her 3-year-old daughter, her trial is now underway.

Shayla Bryan has been sitting in the Beaufort County Detention Center since 2011 charged with attempted murder.

This is a bench trial, so no jury.

The state called their first witness today who was the responding officer from the day of the incident. He simply described what the scene was like when he arrived at the apartment complex where Bryan lived.

Police said it was December 2011 when they were called out to Cross Creek Apartments after a report of a child falling off a balcony, but after investigating police said the child's injuries were intentional, and not consistent with a fall.

Bryan was then arrested.

Attorneys gave their opening arguments, the state called one witness, and then court let out for the day. The bulk of the trial is still to come, and both the state and the defense have long witness lists.

There is no word yet on whether Bryan herself will take the stand.

Bryan faces up to 24 years in prison if she's found guilty.
