Student's short disappearance during school concerns parents

Concerned parents reached out to WTOC about a child who may have wandered off from a Savannah-Chatham County Public School.

Now, school officials explained exactly what happened.

This happened at Georgetown K-8 on Thursday. According to school officials, it was a sixth grader, and he didn't wander off.

School officials said he decided to run away.

The issue is: no one was there to stop him.

According to the school, the sixth grader was acting up in band class and was asked to stand in the hallway. That's when they say the student decided to skip school for the rest of the day.

Officials said he left through one of the back doors and through a fence.

A crossing guard spotted the student leaving and immediately notified administrators. The school went into an emergency protocol and notified the student's parents.

It wasn't until almost an hour later that the student's father found him in a nearby neighborhood.

His parents took him back to school.

District officials said both the teacher and the student are being disciplined.
