Jeff Davis veterans, students post crosses for Memorial Day

JEFF DAVIS CO., GA (WTOC) -

A line of crosses mark the four entrance roads into Hazlehurst for the days before and after Memorial Day.

The Jeff Davis County Veteran's Association displayed crosses that show the name of every local service member killed in war, from World War I to Vietnam.

This year, the group, comprised mostly of Vietnam veterans, enlisted the help of a dozen or so members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes from Jeff Davis County High School.

"At first, I just figured it was a way to get out of math class," joked Damon Upton. "I figured it had something to do with the Army or the military, but I came out here and realized.

The students took turns swinging a sledge hammer to drive metal stakes into the ground to hold the crosses. Others stood several crosses back to make sure they lined up with the precision of Arlington.

Then came the final step of topping the cross with a miniture American flag. The veterans were thankful for the help.

"Our youth are our leaders of tomorrow. They're gonna be your school teachers, your community leaders ... we might have the next congressman, senator, or president our here amongst us today. I'd like them to know a little about what I went through and the history behind it," noted Carroll Walker, chaplain for the associtaiton.
