Questions raised about safety of Savannah River Site

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Questions are being raised about the safety of the Savannah River Site.

A nuclear weapon materials management facility is located on the Savannah River near the Georgia/South Carolina boarder, and on Monday the site's Citizens' Advisory board grilled management on an electrical issue at a nuclear clean-up area.

The board is also worried that the Savannah River Site is now storing up nuclear materials long-term, but that site has been shut down after 21 workers were exposed to low-level nuclear contamination in February.

"Savannah River was never studied or tested for long-term storage of nuclear material," said CAB member Dr. Rose Hayes. "We're not a storage site."

The board pointed out a sharp spike in safety issues at the Savannah River Site this year, and they want to make sure nuclear contamination like the one that happened in New Mexico doesn't happen in here.
