BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

The Building a Better Beaufort Scholarship was announced Tuesday by the leaders of the Beaufort County School District, Know2 Beaufort County and the Technical College of the Lowcountry.

The new program will make a two-year college education at the Technical College of the Lowcountry available, tuition-free, to all qualified graduates of any Beaufort County public high school.

"Higher education provides a foundation on which individuals, families and communities grow and prosper," explained Jeff Bradley, Chairman of Know2 Beaufort County. "The Know2 program was founded on the principle that we want every child to know that higher education is attainable and affordable. B3 goes a long way toward achieving that objective."

The Know2 program will fund the scholarship for the first year while an endowment is being built to fund the program going forward.

"We were in the process of developing B3 when the Know2 program offered to fund the scholarship immediately," explained Dr. Jeffrey Moss, Superintendent of the Beaufort County School District. "We are developing an annual golf tournament that will fund the endowment to provide the scholarships in the future and were a couple of years away from implementation when this opportunity presented itself."

The golf tournament, Swinging with the Superintendent, will be held on July 21 at Callawassie Island. Revenues from the tournament will accumulate for four years in order to create an endowment at TCL to support B3.

B3 will begin paying for students that graduate from high school in 2014 and enroll at TCL for fall 2014 classes. To be eligible, students must graduate from a Beaufort County public high school with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Students will first need to apply to TCL (tcl.edu/b3) and then complete the online FAFSA. Each participant will first secure all available financial aid. The B3 Scholarship will pay the difference after available aid is secured for up to two years, making the tuition effectively free to the student.

"This program makes a clear statement that our community values education beyond high school," explained Dr. Gough, President of TCL. "It is a bold promise that makes college a reality for more high school graduates."
