(RNN) - NFL owners have agreed to award Minneapolis with hosting the 2018 Super Bowl.

The owners chose the home of the Minnesota Vikings over the two other bid cities, New Orleans and Indianapolis. New Orleans has hosted the Super Bowl on 10 occasions, most recently in 2013. Indianapolis has hosted the Super Bowl once in 2012.

"On behalf of the Minnesota Vikings, the state of Minnesota, the Twin Cities, I'd like to thank all our partners for selecting us to host the Super Bowl. We're very excited and very thankful being able to host this event," said Zygi Wilf, the Vikings owner and chairman. "I promise you all, it'll be a special event that we all can be proud of."

Following the announcement, the Minnesota host committee erupted in celebration, hugging each other and giving each other high-fives.

Minneapolis is building a new $1 billion stadium that is expected to open in 2016. The new stadium site is at the same location of the old Metrodome stadium.

NBC will televise the game nationally.

This is the second time the Twin Cities will host the Super Bowl. It previously hosted the 1992 Super Bowl, which featured the Washington Redskins versus the Buffalo Bills. The Redskins won 37-24.

Glendale, AZ, will host the next Super Bowl in 2015. Santa Clara, CA, will host Super Bowl L in 2016. Houston follows in 2017.
