Trial of mom accused of attempting to kill daughter continues

Nearly three years after a Beaufort County mother was accused of trying to kill her 3-year-old daughter, her trial is now underway.

The state played a video of Shayla Bryan talking to investigators where she admitted to hurting her daughter because she "needed to get rid of her past."

In the video you can hear Bryan confessing to Beaufort city Officer Trisha Culligan.

According to the tape, Bryan told Culligan that she beat her daughter, Dionna Hagood, punching her in the chest and face. She stabbed her multiple times, and then threw her from the third floor balcony. Dionna, who is 5-years-old now, was just three at the time.

Culligan said Bryan had many stories before confessing. She originally told police her daughter had fallen from the third floor balcony.

Then she told them a mysterious man walked into her apartment and started attacking Dionna, who was in the bathtub while Bryan was in her room.

Her story then changed again. This time Culligan said Bryan told her she knew who the man was, Justin Singleton, a man she was about to start dating.

After she confessed she started blaming the devil, Dionna's father, and singleton.

Bryan's mother, Lavonia Bryan took the stand Tuesday to defend her daughter.

She said her daughter wasn't in her right mind when this happened. She believes she is better now, and the family, especially Dionna, wants her back home.

"Dionna is constantly asking about her mother. Just recently we went to church, and she said, ‘Jesus could you please bring my mother home,'" Lavonia said.

The state rested their case Tuesday. The defense will continue Wednesday morning.

Bryan is facing up to 30 years in prison.
