SCCPSS approves new bell schedule

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School board is rolling out a new bell schedule.

The board voted on Wednesday to approve changing the start times for all the schools beginning this fall.

This all started because buses were having trouble staying on schedule, and the board hopes this will fix the problem.

K-8 schools will be starting 35 minutes earlier, and charter school students will be starting 30 minutes earlier. The school day will also end earlier.

High school students will be starting 15 minutes later. Middle school students will be starting 10 minutes later and elementary school students will start 30 minutes later. They'll get out of school later as well.

Some parents are concerned about these changes interfering with work, but other people said they believe it will be beneficial to the students.

"It might help them get to school on time [because many of them are tardy]," said Kim Sancomb, Information Specialist at Windsor Elementary.

"I think it will work, just as long as the parents are in line with everybody else in order for the whole thing to work," said grandparent Pandora Glenn.

There's also a different bell schedule for 11 schools participating in a pilot program.  The school district will study whether schedule changes improve academic achievement.

Research shows younger students learn better in the early part of the day and older students learn better later.
