Democrats vying for SC superintendent to debate

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The four Democratic candidates for South Carolina's state schools superintendent are meeting for a televised debate.

ETV will broadcast the debate Thursday starting at 7 p.m.

The Democratic primary centers on properly funding public education, increasing teacher pay, creating a fair teacher evaluation system and boosting state support for public schools.

Participating in the debate are state Rep. Jerry Govan of Orangeburg; South Carolina State University dean of graduate studies Tom Thompson; former director of school transformation Montrio Belton; and former South Carolina Education Association president Sheila Gallagher.

All four candidates emphasize the need for equitable funding for all schools and to ensure "base student costs" are fully funded under current laws by closing tax exemptions.

The primary is June 10.
