Authorities monitoring bear wandering in Midway

MIDWAY, GA (WTOC) -

The Department of Natural Resources has stopped monitoring a wandering bear in Midway hoping it's moving deeper into the woods.

Authorities say it's a black bear around 300 to 400 pounds. If you see the bear, they ask that you don't approach it and get inside.

The bear was spotted in the area of Medway Road and North Coastal Highway by motorist this morning.

Rich and Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes along with several other officers have been searching the wooded areas which surround the location where the bear was spotted in an attempt to locate the animal.

Midway Police Officer Mark Rich said their hope was to locate it and move it away from the general population.

"It is not our intention to kill it but redirect the animal from this area back into the woods," he said.

DNR officials believe it probably came from the Okeefenokee swamp.

It is advised not to approach the bear and let it do it's thing- which maybe searching for food - it is unlawful to kill the animal unless human life is in imminent danger.
