Islands HS holds groundbreaking for new gym

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

History was made on Thursday on the Islands.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held to celebrate the beginning of construction for an ESPOLST project at Islands High School.

The project includes a new gymnasium with a hardwood playing surface, folding bleachers for more than 1,200 people, varsity locker rooms, a weight room, two health classrooms and an open lobby with a concession area and restrooms.

"Long overdue," said SCCPSS Superintendent Dr. Thomas Lockamy. "As you know, we have really focused on neighborhood schools. This particular educational complex, having the middle, elementary and high school within walking distance of each other, this is a much needed project. The current gymnasium is substandard. We have been able to use it, but the new gymnasium will have the square footage needed."

A separate addition will also be constructed to add science labs for Physical Science and Biology.
