White House deputy investigates Phoenix VA scandal

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rob Nabors showed up to the Phoenix VA on Thursday morning. President Barack Obama put him in charge of overseeing the investigation.

CBS 5 News is told an estimated 70 veteran service organizations and nonprofits were invited to meet with Nabors and interim VA Director Steve Young. The meeting ended Nabors' day-long visit to get to answers about the scandal.

"It was hard holding them back. Everybody participated," said David Lucier about all the stakeholders in the meeting that was held in the basement of the Phoenix VA. Lucier is president of the Arizona Veterans and Military Leadership Alliance.

Another stakeholder who attended the meeting, Judy Bieschel, department commander of the American Legion Arizona, says it appears Nabors, an Army brat, was really focused on getting to the bottom of the controversy that's rocked the veteran affairs system nationwide.

"He [Nabors] thought the single biggest threat was the veterans having the lack of confidence in the VA system," Beischel said.

She added that interim Phoenix VA Director Steve Young also updated veterans on efforts to hire more schedulers, doctors and nurses. And that wasn't all.

"They did just hire a couple of people, temporarily, to replace Sharon Helman's other two people that were put on leave," Beischel added.

But most importantly, the stakeholders feel their concerns about accountability were heard.

"That's predicated on a thorough investigation," Lucier said. "It's also predicated on transparency. Once that takes place, we will have accountability," he added.
