TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

John Camille and his roommate have always had a special bond. For the past four years the two have been by each other's side through the best and worst of times.

"He's a real solid guy. You don't find men like him anymore. He was the first face I saw when I came to in the ICU when I lost my leg," said Camille.

Tempe police said Camille's roommate was shot after he saw John Brazel push his ex-girlfriend Darla Faust into a car in the parking lot of his apartment complex.

"At that time Mr. Brazel pulled out a firearm. He shot Ms. Faust multiple times and then shot the innocent bystander who was the neighbor who was trying to help," said Tempe police Lt. Michael Pooley.

Police confirmed Faust did have a restraining order but that didn't stop Brazel from showing up at her apartment. In the months leading up to the shooting police had been called several times.

"While he did do a wonderful thing and it is great that we have people like that, I just thought all of this could have been avoided," said Camille.

Tempe police said Brazel was located Friday morning after a chase with authorities ended outside of Coolidge. When Pinal County deputies tried to detain Brazel, he got back into his vehicle and fatally shot himself, Tempe police spokesman Lt. Michael Pooley said.
