NB I-95 reopens after police chase ends in crash near Port Wentworth

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) - I-95 Northbound near the 109 mile marker in Port Wentworth has reopened after an earlier police chase ended in an accident.

The chase started around the Piercefield/Harris Trail area off US17 in Richmond Hill.

According to Richmond Hill Police Chief Billy Reynolds, an officer observed a black Mercedes driving through a neighborhood known for drug activity and recognized the driver.

The officer knew he had a suspended license and tried to initiate a traffic stop of the vehicle, but instead, the driver sped off.

The driver ran several stop signs and also ran several people off the road, which ended up in a pursuit that ended on I-95.

Authorities deployed stop sticks and the suspect lost control of the vehicle and overturned, hitting another car in the process.

No one sustained any major injuries.

The suspect is now in custody at Richmond Hill Police Department and is facing multiple charges.

Officers believe the driver is wanted out of South Carolina with felony drug charges pending.

"We're just getting this wrapped up. Trying to get the scene cleared so we can get traffic moving again and we will take him back to richmond hill interview him and we what else develops," Reynolds said.
