TUCSON, AZ (AP/CBS5) -

A Tucson soldier who reportedly had a role in helping to rescue former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch in Iraq will be laid to rest this weekend.

A funeral service for Command Sgt. Maj. Martin Barreras will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Community Church in Tucson and will be conducted by a chaplain from Barreras' unit, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, based at Fort Bliss, TX.

Following the funeral service, Barreras will be laid to rest at South Lawn Mortuary and Cemetery located at 5401 S. Park Ave. in Tucson.

U.S. Department of Defense officials say Barreras died May 13 in San Antonio Military Medical Center of wounds suffered in Afghanistan.

They say the 49-year-old was injured earlier this month when his unit was attacked in Herat Province.

Barreras' son says his father was instrumental in Lynch's rescue but didn't talk about it much.

Military officials have not commented on the matter.
