South Effingham Elementary prepares for major renovations

As students mark the last day of school, South Effingham Elementary prepares to start a new project to renovate the more than 30-year-old structure.

Pope Construction Company, Inc. has the next 60 days to complete $3.4 million worth of renovations before the students return from summer vacation.

Today, students got to have a field day outdoors to mark the end of the year.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved the project, which will include the installation of new ceilings, floors, fresh paint, upgrades to the restrooms and work rooms, a new entrance with state of the art security and new restrooms for the teachers.

"It stresses me out a little bit because I know all of the details that need to be attended to, and we have about 60 days to do it," said Principal Susan Hartzog. "We have a great contractor. They are prepared and they have a plan. I feel confident they will meet their July 31 deadline."

The renovations are funded through $1.3 million in state funds and $2.1 million from special purpose local option sales taxes.
