Summer travel season kicks off in Georgia

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Friday kicks off the beginning of the summer travel season, and the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety, along with the Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources and Georgia State Patrol, want to make sure everyone has a safe Memorial Day weekend and summer season on the roads and water ways.

They sent a message on Friday that they will be enforcing all traffic laws.

Traffic fatalities are down 22 percent compared to 2013, something the office is proud of, but still wants to improve on.

"We're calling our effort today Choose Your Ride," said Director of the Georgia Governor's Office of High Safety Harris Blackwood. "And we want people to make a conscious choice. You be the controller of what ride you take, don't let it be a DNR officer or Georgia State Trooper or a local police officer of a sheriff."

The office also offered a few tips to remember while on the road: always be proactive and buckle up, make sure children are in a proper car seat and put that cell phone down.
