Local group walks 122 miles to raise money for veterans

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Twenty-two American veterans commit suicide each day.

That fact is what motivated a Savannah group to walk the 122 miles along Highway 17, from the Florida state line, beginning Friday night at 11 p.m., to the finish line on River Street, at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

A support group that included a number of veterans and Gulfstream employees alternated walking and shadowing the walkers, who each wore a backpack that carried both supplies and symbolism.

"Having the rucksack weigh us down is symbolic, pretty much saying 'We are going to carry your load, we are going to take the load off of you, and we are going to put it on us.' So, we are here to support you, pretty much saying to them," said Craig Carry, The Fallen.

The group is raising money to fund a permanent retreat where veterans can cope with their problems, and reaclimate to civilian and family life.

The organization is called Active Heroes. Click here for more information.
