Beaufort holds annual Memorial Day parade

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

In the Lowcountry, hundreds of people in the military community of Beaufort came out to celebrate Memorial Day on Monday morning.

The annual Beaufort Memorial Day parade featured dozens of floats, musicians and local organizations.

People lined the streets to show their support for our military veterans.

“I try to make it every year,” said Beaufort native Inez Plowdeniz. “I missed it for the first time last year.”

This year, Plowdeniz’s youngest daughter is marching in the parade, but she’s here to represent the entire family.

“My husband was in the Army, my son is still in there and I think it’s a very special day and I want to pay tribute to them and I say ‘God bless them’ and ‘God Bless America,” she said.

It’s an event that continues to bring the young and old together.

Beaufort native Stewart Johnson said he’s been coming to this parade for more than half a century to pay his respects.

“I think they deserve the praise and our thoughts, and we should show that we appreciate what they all did,” said Johnson.

And despite being 83 years old, he’s not planning to let old age stop him.

“I’ll be coming down here [when I’m] 93 I reckon!” he said.

Whether or not you served in the military, many agree that coming out to today's festivities was the very least they could do for all that’s been done for them.

The parade started and ended at Beaufort National Cemetery, which held a traditional ceremony afterward.

For Georgia voters, early voting is officially over as the Georgia Primary is only three days away. Tuesday will see many Georgians heading to the polls to vote for General Primary and Nonpartisan election.
