WTOC Senior Active: Memorial Day events

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Memorial Day events all weekend long placed attention past a day off from work, paying tribute to the true meaning of the holiday.

"It's the day we remember all of our fallen brothers and sisters from all wars,'' said Alan Harvey of the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

These weren't exclusively senior events, but they were heavily attended by seniors, people who acknowledge and honor that this is not simply a three-day weekend.

"Well, it's a day of remembrance, remember the fellows who gave their lives for the country," said George Bartell at Monday's Memorial Day event at Bonaventure Cemetery,

"I just wish there was some way that people wouldn't just slough off the sacrifices that men and women made for us in every war," added Tommy Brunson,

Those sacrifices are honored at a Catholic cemetery, in an event coordinated by Brunson, in which  hundreds of crosses symbolize a fraction of the lives lost.

And where the message of Memorial Day is carried forward.

"You and I wouldn't be free to stand here and do this if it weren't for these people," said Brunson. "If you are a veteran, if your daddy was a veteran, your momma was a veteran or you know about veterans, tell any young person who will listen about it. Tell them a story about it, let them know, because if you don't pay attention to history, you're going to live it over again. And we'll have need for more of these crosses down the road.''
