Beaufort County Council meets to discuss budget items

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Beaufort County Council members met Tuesday night to discuss several budget items, including the Daufuskie Ferry and the school district budget.

Regarding the Daufuskie Ferry services, we've learned the state has increased its grant from $50,000 to $75,000.

The council voted to continue using two ferry services, Haig Point and J&W Greenwood.

Haig Point will provide ferry services for Beaufort County students and county employees at an annual rate of $145,000 per year for two years.

J&W Greenwood will provide ferry services for residents and property owners of Daufuskie Island at an annual cost of roughly $225,000.

The Council also passed the Beaufort County School District budget "by title only" in the first of three readings.

But County Council wants to see those financial numbers reworked.

The district is asking for $192 million for the 2014-2015 school year which is $10 million more.

School officials say the majority of the increase comes from unfunded state mandates.

County Council will hold two public hearings before taking a final vote on the district's budget. The two hearings will be on June 9 and June 23 at 6 p.m. inside Council Chambers of the County Administration Building.
