Your children can play carnival games, listen to live music or work in the lab of a mad scientist during the Campbell County Public Library's Summer Reading Club kickoff event.
The day of family-friendly fun is 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, June 7 at each branch of the Campbell County Public Library.
This year's theme is Fizz, Boom, Read with a full schedule of events planned at all three branches to spark your child's interest in reading and science. There's even free food beginning at noon.
The first 200 children and teens to register Saturday will receive a free registration prize.
Throughout the summer, kids will also get the chance to make four different crafts at the library: "Harry Potter" wands (instructions below), DIY lightsabers, a robot vest (instructions below) and even a homemade lava lamp.
The Newport Branch will make robot vests Monday during preschool time. Little wizards can also cast a spell during the Harry Potter/Hogwarts Potions Class June 21 in Newport and July 24 in Cold Spring.
How to make a robot vest
Cut a child-size head hole in the bottom the bag, two slits up each side and one down the middle of the front.
Use your crayons to decorate the front, making springs and a control panel.
Dot glue and place the bottle caps on the vest to create buttons.
Let it dry and then the fun can begin!
How to make a Harry Potter wand
Select a wand-sized dowel to begin.
Use your hot glue gun to create a pattern at the bottom where the wizard will hold the wand.
Let the glue dry thoroughly.
Spray paint the wand. Let it dry.
Cast your spell!
