Chester Ellis to be in run-off with Jolene Byrne

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Reverend Chester Ellis has announced that he will take part in the run-off election for Chatham County School Board President.

Ellis was the third place finisher at the polls last Tuesday, but has qualified for the run-off after second place finisher David Simons decided to drop out of the race.

Ellis will face Jolene Byrne in the run-off.

Byrne took 40 percent of the vote and Ellis saw 17 percent of the votes in the primary election.

David Simons, who received 21 percent of the votes, announced he was ending his candidacy for School Board President on May 22.

In an email sent to WTOC's Don Logana, Simons said, "After careful consideration and with the support of my family, I am terminating my bid for Savannah-Chatham County School Board President. This position is too important to be distracted by issues unrelated to educating the children of Chatham County. I have learned from the challenges of candidacy, and I believe these lessons will make me a better campaign consultant going forward. I truly care about the future of our children and this community and believe this is the right decision at this time."

The run-off will be held on July 22.
