Murder trial resumes for Emmanuel Perez

Posted: Updated:

Day two of a Savannah murder trial continued on Wednesday morning.

Sgt. Emmanuel Perez is charged with murdering Armando Montez outside of a Savannah tire shop a year ago.

Prosecutors said Perez shot Montez out of jealousy because Montez was sleeping with the Perez's wife. Perez's defense attorneys said the soldier acted in the heat of the moment and it was manslaughter, not murder.

On Wednesday morning, the jury heard testimony from more than eight witnesses, including several who were present and witnessed the murder in April of 2013.

A mechanic working at Brother Tires the day of the murder testified that Perez told him to "say goodbye to Armando and give him a kiss", just moments before the murder.

A military police lieutenant testified that Perez drove himself to the MP station at Hunter Army Airfield, where he turned in his ID and keys, saying his gun was in his car. SCMPD officers were then called to pick him up.

Officers and detectives that interacted with Perez not long after the shooting testified, saying his demeanor was calm and relaxed and almost emotionless.

Officers collected Perez's clothes after noticing what appeared to be blood stains on his boots.

Court is in recess for lunch, and the trial will resume just before 2 p.m.
