WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

A small dog had to be rescued from a storm drain Wednesday night after somehow falling through the cracks.

The small black and brown yorkie fell about three feet down a drain in the Creek at Forest Hills apartment complex. It took three Wilmington Firefighters to pry the drain cover open to reach the dog.

Once the drain cover was off, rescuers were able to pull the dog to safety and return it to its owner. The woman who owned the dog could do nothing but hold tears of joy back when she was able to hold her best friend back in her arms again.

She didn't care to go on camera after the incident, but appeared to be both relieved and overwhelmed with emotion of the rescue of her dog.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving. But they are also on the hunt for anyone who is distracted while driving.  "Well I checked the jail when I left a few minutes ago and we have openings," s...More >>
