Effingham Co. jury duty phone scam

Posted: Updated:

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office along with many other law enforcement agencies are warning folks of a telephone scam involving jury duty.

The caller identifies himself as a member of Warrants and Civil Division and advises the victim that he or she did not respond to a jury summons. In order for people to avoid arrest, the victim can pay the associated fines using a pre-paid debit card, usually a green dot card. Officers say this is a scam.

"We want to remind people no law enforcement agency is actually going to call you and solicit payment over the phone, much less over using a pre-paid debit card. So if you get a phone call and somebody is identifying themselves as somebody from the sheriff's office asking you to pay a fine, don't do it, don't provide any personal information and also call your local law enforcement agency," said David Ehsanipoor of the Effingham County Sheriff's Office.

This scam has been happening all over Georgia.
