Operation Thunder continues to focus on pedestrian traffic

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

It's day two of Operation Thunder, law enforcement agencies from all over Georgia are here teaming up with Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police to crack down traffic fatalities. They also trying to reduce the number of pedestrians hit despite another incident that happened Friday night.

Thankfully it was not fatal but Garden City Police are investigating after a pedestrian was hit while he was crossing GA Highway 21 near Burger King.

Garden City Police say the man was not using the crosswalk when he was hit by a car. They say he was conscious when they took him to the hospital but no word yet on his current condition.

Police say these are the types of incidents they want to minimize during Operation Thunder.  Not only are they asking drivers to slow down and pay attention but they also warning pedestrians to obey the law.

"I know the crosswalks maybe a little new to some people but they are there for a reason and we want to make sure that they will be held accountable for abiding by that law," said SCMPD Interim Chief Julie Tolbert.

Operation Thunder continues for the next 89 days. Expect to see many different types of checkpoints including areas where they will be monitoring pedestrian traffic.
