Hurricane season starts

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this will be a "slower than usual Atlantic Hurricane season," but it is important to prepare for the worst, just in case.

"Be in a safe place and have the supplies you need to get through," said Roger Von Duyke, the owner of Service Master Savannah.

His company is usually called in to help clean up the damage left behind from a hurricane. He has been doing that for 12 years.

"When these happen, it is one of the truly worst things that ever happens," said Von Duyke. "It is so large, and on such a scale that you could wonder how could you ever recover, or how this could ever pass and get back to normal?"

According to the National Weather Service, hurricanes have cost more than $300 billion in damage to homes and businesses, since 2003.

Even though we have been very fortunate in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry, it is no time to be complacent. Review your evacuation plan, and make sure you have a hurricane kit containing food, batteries, a weather radio, flashlights, lighters, a first aid kit, water, and your cell phone and charger.

"It is important that when the storm does come, that you maintain safety," said Duyke. "There is really nothing you own that you can't replace, and I can help, but I can't replace your life."
