Second Harvest kicks off summer feeding program

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia will begin serving thousands of free meals to kids Monday with the hopes of keeping them from going hungry over the summer break from school.

It's all part of the Second Harvest Summer Feeding Program called Kids Cafe. Volunteers will be serving hot nutritious meals to children all throughout the region.

The program is for children who usually receive free and reduced lunches during the school year, but who may not have the same access to a good meal when school is out for break.

"You know, we like to think about the fact that it's a great time, vacation, everyone's thinking about the beach, but hunger doesn't take a vacation. Those children still need to eat and they still need access to food," said Mary Jane Crouch, executive director, Second Harvest.

The summer feeding program will be at 72 different locations this summer -- from schools to churches and community centers, Second Harvest volunteers will serve 12,000 meals a day this year, making this the most they've served yet.
