Chatham County Superior Court Judge Timothy R. Walmsley sentenced Steven Ray Carter to 20 years in prison with 10 to serve for armed robbery and aggravated assault stemming from a July 23, 2013 incident at the Family Dollar on Gwinnett Street.

Carter, who agreed to a plea deal Monday morning negotiated by Assistant District Attorney Matthew A. Breedon, faced a maximum of life plus thirty years for the charges filed against him.

In July, Carter entered the Family Dollar and waited for all the customers to leave. He then approached the register, pulled out a silver revolver, aimed it at the clerk and demanded money. Carter then took cash from the register and left the store.

The incident was caught by surveillance cameras. A week after the incident, Carter's probation officer called the investigating officers and stated the Carter might be a suspect. The probation officer had spoken with Carter's brother who stated that Steven Carter had moved out because he robbed the Family Dollar.

The Family Dollar clerk positively identified Carter as the robber.
