Online drive to help school of murdered teacher

TOOMBS CO., GA (WTOC) -

Blue ribbons stretch across Toombs County in memory of a murdered elementary teacher.

Vickie Jenkins found another way to pay tribute to Robin Matthews. She launched an online fund drive to buy school supplies at Matthews' school, Lyons Primary.

"We have so many families in Toombs County that are struggling," Jenkins said Monday. "I just thought this is a way to remember Robin and help the children of those families, too."

Jenkins said they hope to raise $10,000 by next fall when classes resume in Toombs County. School administrators said the drive was a great gesture to remember a teacher who also attended the school as a child.

Matthews was murdered last Wednesday. Security cameras at Vidalia's WalMart show a man getting in Matthews' car with her.

Police tell WTOC the suspect in Matthews' murder, Simon Dixon Mitchell, told them he told Matthews his mother was in a nearby hospital and needed a ride there.

Police found Matthews murdered in her car on a side road not far from the hospital. Mitchell faces charges of murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment, and others.
