Marsh Pointe shooting incident under investigation

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting incident that occurred Sunday afternoon at a Hilton Head apartment complex.

Just before 2:30 pm, Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Marsh Pointe Apartments. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with a 27-year-old male victim who advised that unknown suspect(s) had opened fired on him as he drove into the apartment complex.

The victim said that he and two friends had gone to the apartments to pick up a bicycle from a family member. As they approached the 400 building, someone began shooting at his vehicle.

The victim stopped the car and he and both of his passengers jumped out, attempting to flee on foot. As they ran, the victim advised that one suspect continued to pursue and shoot at him.

The victim and one of his passengers were able to get a ride with another friend, who they saw leaving the area at the time the shooting occurred. Once home, the victim contacted law enforcement to report the incident. He returned to the scene when deputies had safely secured the area.

The victim's vehicle and two other vehicles in the parking lot were found to have sustained damages consistent with gunfire.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

It is believed that the shooting may have been in retaliation for a dispute that occurred earlier in the day at the Island Recreation Center, involving the victim and several other subjects.

Investigators are following up on leads regarding suspected involved parties.

The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to contact either Investigator Sgt. D. Seifert at 843-255-3414 or Crimestoppers.
