Effingham County sees increase in jury duty scams

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office has told WTOC they have seen a significant increase on Monday alone in the number of people advising they were the targets of a jury duty scam.

A caller identifies himself as a member of the Warrants or Civil Division and advises the victim that they did not respond to a jury summons. To avoid arrest, they are telling citizens they can pay the associated fines using a pre-paid debit card, usually a Green Dot card.

"We've received between 100 and 200 complaints [Monday] alone, and we want to just remind people to just kind of be mindful, don't give out your personal information, don't give out your credit card information or anything like that, and if somebody calls you, let law enforcement know so we have a heads up," said Effingham County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer David Ehsanipoor.

This isn't just happening in Effingham County. Chatham County has also received similar calls as well as sheriff's offices all over Georgia.
