A parent called 12 On Your Side about a new app that could be linking your child to nude images. Young people are allegedly posting photos and naming names, even schools, using an app called Streetchat.
Once you click on the Streetchat app, you get a long list of schools based on your location.
"Students are using the app, sending anonymous posts including full names and nude photos," said a Hanover parent in an email to NBC 12 News.
"This app, and the images it might be capable of receiving, could put [students] in very serious legal jeopardy," said NBC 12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin.
The parent claims students are bullying, defaming, and making false comments.
"The police can't do anything, unless the parents file a complaint and follow through with it," said Benjamin.
Benjamin notes state law mandates that each school board shall implement, by July 1, 2014, policies and procedures to educate school board employees about bullying, and the need to create a bully-free environment.
"It used to be if somebody wrote something unfavorable on a bathroom wall, you could just cross it out," said Benjamin. "You can't cross things out on the Internet."
The app includes high school, middle school and even elementary school listings.
"If they receive on their phone any erotic images of someone under 18 in a state of undress, then they are in possession of child pornography," said Benjamin. "They are vulnerable to criminal prosecution."
We got the following statement from Hanover Schools:
"We are continuing to focus our efforts on gathering additional information regarding this issue, and we have been in contact with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office. Appropriate measures will be taken when further details are available and additional information can be confirmed by school division personnel."
