WAUKESHA, WI (WTMJ/CNN) - Two 12-year-old girls in Wisconsin are accused of stabbing one of their friends 19 times.
They're being charged as adults in the attempted murder of another girl.
"I've seen a lot of things on Facebook and my friends are like: 'Oh My God this is crazy, 12 year olds,'" said Emily Edwards.
Edwards used to baby sit suspect Morgan Geyser a couple of years ago.
Seeing that same person in court accused of a gory plot to kill a classmate didn't add up.
"She was never like that, like I never thought. She was very quiet, always polite, never out spoken or anything like that so I just didn't think she would do something like that," Edwards said.
Police say the girls lured the victim into a park after a sleep over Friday.
Authorities say it was all to impress a character on a web site.
All the girls involved went to Waukesha Schools. And an email was sent to parent about the tragedy.
It included a letter from the police chief, details about the stabbing and parental tips on how to talk to your kids about the tragedy.
"It's absolutely horrible, it's frightening," said Jaime Cutts, a parent.
Cutts got the email. Her kids are still young but the details of the case, and the dark connection to the internet has her worried.
"You just don't know what gets into these kids heads," Cutts said. "I guess parents need to get more involved. It's just sad how many people don't know what's going on."
The victim, who is also 12, was struck in some major organs, but survived.
Authorities say the two girls were trying to impress a fictional character they believed was real.
That character is known as The Slender Man, and he appears in many works of online fiction.
The character, often tall and faceless with long sharp tentacles, was created in 2009 by writer Eric Knudsen.
Since then, it's taken on a life of its own, being used and referenced in horror stories online and elsewhere.
In this case, the girls reported learning about Slender Man on a website called creepypasta.
The people behind creepypasta responded on Twitter writing: "Our hearts go out to the 12-year old girl who was attacked."
