Local groups oppose list of Capital Sales Tax projects

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Two Beaufort County groups are showing their opposition towards a list of potential Capital Sales Tax projects.

The Beaufort County Tea Party group and the Greater Bluffton Republican Club are part of Voters Against Sales Tax. They've created an online petition, saying the list is full of wants instead of needs.

Voters Against Sales Tax says many of these projects are frivolous and don't need to happen right now to burden taxpayers.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the online petition has almost 150 signatures.

Last week, the Capital Sales Tax Commission narrowed down the project list from about $600 million down to $300 million.

The list has been divided into three tiers and includes projects like Bluffton Parkway, extending the Beaufort Waterfront Park and adding a parking garage, as well as looking into buying the Port of Port Royal.

The list is not final yet, and the maximum amount for those projects is $240 million.

"Basically, what they're doing is they're putting the cart before the horse. They went out to the public and said 'tell us all the projects you'd like to see done' instead of taking necessary and needed projects," said Ann Ubelis, Spokesperson for Voters Against Sales Tax.

"Their position on the projects, if the list was blessed by Pope Francis, wouldn't be satisfactory and also I think the idea of being frivolous certainly creates an idea that they haven't looked at the total list," said Craig Forrest, Chairman of the Capital Sales Tax Commission.

At 1 p.m. Wednesday, the commission will meet at the County Administration building to finalize the list, how long each of them should last and they also have to decide how to word the language for the referendum.
