There's a new, but familiar, face around Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Following a national search, the hospital hired a local primary care physician to be its first Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Kurt Gambla started the new job this week and brings more than 24 years of experience working as an internist in Beaufort.

Gambla has also been involved in almost every administrative committee at the hospital.

As Chief Medical Officer, Gambla will serve as an intermediary between doctors and administrators.

"Yes, I plan to be very visible, not only in the medical community and the hospital, but also out in the community at large, just to get an inventory of what our patients want, what they need and to bring that back to our medical staff, bring that bad to administration, so we can all work together," said Gambla.

Gambla spent the first two years of his medical training at the Beaufort-Jasper Comprehensive Health Services.

He is a graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.
