SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Gum Branch man suffering from a bullet wound to the head was found in a ditch Thursday night near the intersection of Elam Road and Highway 196, according to Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes.

Marquana Adale Jasper of Ludowici, who was with the victim when first responders arrived on scene to treat him, has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident.

Captain Orrin Nestor spoke with Jasper and asked her if she knew Stewart. She told Nestor she did and she had last seen him at 2 p.m. on Thursday. She said Stewart had not been acting right, and kept saying he was going to die.

Sometime between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Jasper went with Stewart to a park behind the Dug Out Sports bar in Hinesville where she said he seemed to be feeling better. Jasper then eventually left him in the park and drove home.

Jasper told Nestor after being home for about 30 minutes, she decided to go to the store when she saw Stewart by a church on Elam Church Road "looking crazy."

According to the report, she stopped and asked him where he was going, then continued onto a convenience store on GA 196 and Airport Road and returned home.

Becoming concerned for Stewart, she left her residence and went out to look for him. As she was driving down GA 196 in the direction of Airport Road she stated she saw a man lying in the ditch.

Jasper drove to the Handy Land convenience store and asked the clerk to call 911. She went to the location where Stewart was lying and found him on his back.

The victim was airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where he is in critical condition.

Authorities detained and interrogated Jasper regarding her alleged involvement before jailing and charging her.
