POOLER, GA (WTOC) -

An early morning house fire around 4 a.m. on Saturday, June 7th on White Dogwood lane has left a couple displaced.

Chief Wade Simmons with Pooler fire department says 2 Labrador Retrievers woke up their owners to alert them that the back of their house was on fire.

The fire started on the back porch and then later spread to the back of the house.

The owners of the house were able to escape but both of the dogs stayed inside and hid.

Firefighters were able to remove the dogs from the home but it was too late. CPR was attempted on the dogs but they were unable to be revived. It was determined that the dogs died of smoke inhalation.

The red cross is assisting the family but Chief Simmons says the couple has family nearby who they will stay with.

Chief Simmons also tells WTOC that there is extensive damage to the back of the house but the owners should be able to rebuild.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
