HERMANTOWN, MN (KQDS/CNN) - Friday was the final night a Hermantown, MN teen would sleep under the stars after sleeping outside for 364 days already.

It started as a personal challenge for Rudy Hummel.

But soon after, the 17-year-old realized he could help people with the project.

He decided to make it a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity, saying there are a lot of homeless people who don't have a choice about sleeping outside.

He also made it a fundraiser for a bird observatory.

Hummel asked people to pledge money for each night he spent outside his house.

Initially he had a less ambitious goal.

"This was too easy, I'm going to go for a whole year, which I knew I could do, because I had done winter camping in Scouts before and if it ever became a safety concern, the house is right there," Hummel said.

Hummel slept outside through the coldest winter in northern Minnesota in 139 years.

He said the worst part wasn't the cold; it was the mice that invaded his snow cave.

Hummel said his biggest take-away from the year is never to lose faith in humanity.
